Mr. Herring was born on January 20, 1932 in Dubach, Louisiana and is the youngest child of Thomas Austin and Mattie Larance Herring. He died on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at the Princeton Place Nursing Home in Ruston, LA. He married his sweetheart, Ellie Monnie D. Peterson, on November 6, 1950. Together they raised four sons….Bill, Mike, David, and Dude. Virgil was an avid fisherman and loved playing the guitar and singing to his wife and family. He spent many hours working in his garden and sharing his vegetables.

Mr. Herring is survived by three sons, Mike Herring and wife Jo Sharon of Bernice, La, David Herring and wife Gwen of Dubach, La, and James "Dude" Herring of Farmerville, La, one daughter-in-law, Susan Herring of Homer, La, 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Monnie D. Herring, grandaughter Melody Jane Herring, and his eldest son, Virgil W. "Bill" Herring.

Pallbearers will be grandsons Jamey Herring, Michael Herring Jr, Josh Herring, Luke Herring, Ethan Herring, and David Wayne Herring.

Visitation will be held at Owens from 5:00 - 8:00 pm on Monday, September 9. The family requests memorials be made to Grace Bible Baptist Church, 216 Rough Edge Road, Ruston, LA 71270.
