Funeral services for Mr. Jewel Barkley will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, November 7, 2109, at First Baptist Church in Bernice. LA with Rev. Danny Hawthorne and Rev. Michael McIntosh officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery in Bernice under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston, LA.
On Tuesday, November 5, 2019, Jewel Barkley, loving husband and father passed away at age 82. Jewel was born on March 17, 1937 in Wilhite, LA to Ben and Annie Jane Barkley. He worked in the auto-parts business for many years. On December 24, 1961 he married Doris Prewitt Barkley. They raised a daughter, Melody.
Jewel had a passion for tinkering (Mr. Fixit), wood-working and having a green thumb. He was known for his quick wit, his infectious smile and his kind and compassionate spirit.
Jewel was preceded in death by his father, Ben and his mother Annie Jane. He is survived by his wife Doris; daughter Melody and husband Tom Frazier of Natchitoches, LA; two grandsons: Andrew Frazier and wife Jane of Reidsville, NC and Travis Frazier and wife Lauren of Seven Lakes, NC; two great-daughters: Mary Reid and Caroline and another great-grand on the way.
Serving as pallbearers will be Andrew Frazier, Travis Frazier, Stan Elkins, Wes Bowen, Tom Elkins, Daniel Elkins and honorary pallbearer Chris Barkley.
