Obituary

Funeral services for Mr. Jerry Lemoine Hanes, age 76 of Quitman, will be held at 1:00 PM, Thursday, November 14, 2019 at Antioch Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Quitman with Rev. Kyle Leach and Rev. Stuart Toms officiating. Burial will follow at Antioch Cemetery under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston.

Mr. Hanes was born July 2, 1943 in Quitman, LA to Ira and Edna Hanes. He died November 13, 2019 in Quitman, LA. Jerry retired after 47 years from Hodge Paper Mill. He is preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Loe Hanes, his parents and brother Elmer Hanes.

Jerry Hanes was a man who embodied the epitome of hardworking.  He worked hard at his career, a job that required him to frequently wake up in the middle of the night and return to a place he had already spent all day. He worked hard at his home, a farmland with cattle that required constant maintenance and should have taken all his remaining time and energy.  And yet, he was hard working at church, where he was an elder and lifetime member ensuring the graveyard was properly cared for, taking constant phone calls and keeping the property pristine for the loved ones of others that now rest.  He was in the church every Sunday, too, praising the lord for the life he had, working just as hard at worship as he did everything else.  You might think, then, that with working so hard in all other aspects of life, Jerry would have had to sacrifice time with his family to be so diligent.  His loved ones know, however, that there is nothing in Jerry's life he worked harder at.  He was present for baseball and softball games, he was there for sharing life lessons at the table under the front yard tree, watching the cows graze in the pasture.  Jerry was an avid outdoorsman who loved fox hunting, deer hunting, and duck hunting where he shared a camp with his brothers at Parkdale, AR along with his hunting companion, Meaux Scout. And he was there to show his love for the Lord, and how he wanted nothing more than for us to know Him.  Jerry now knows Him even better, and is working hard at resting and watching over us.  Thank You.

He is survived by his wife Linda Perry Hanes of 11 years, daughter, Susan (Eric Williams) of Quitman, step daughter, Sarah Beth (Justin Toms) of Shreveport, two step sons: Stu Toms, Jr. of Ruston and Joe Peel and wife Melanie of Ruston; grandchildren: Christian Robinson of Shreveport, Katie Williams of Quitman, Anna Claire Peel of Ruston and Aaron Peel of Ruston, Tyler Toms and Kale Toms of Calvin, Selwin Toms and Stella Toms of Shreveport; brother, Danny Hanes; sister-in-law, Doris Hanes of Jonesboro and numerous other family and friends.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dwight Lamkin, Roger Heflin, Billy Mize, Claude McMillan, Ray Dean Mazie, Royce Walker, Max Walker, Larry Peevy, Odis Walsworth, Jr., John Blake, Bro. Bates, Mike Brown, Charlie Newton, David Ray Duck, Tom Goss and Uncle Winston Loe.

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until service time, Thursday, at the Church in Quitman.
